Dentures / Partials FAQ's

Oklahoma Dentist

Oklahoma Dentures Patient

Why should I consider dentures or partials?
Dentures or partials solve some rather burdensome dental problems. Besides giving the appearance of natural teeth, dentures are created to be functional. They can help improve speech, and greatly improve your appearance. The presence of dentures can enhance the look of your smile, and have been known to improve self-esteem. The decision to have dentures will also improve your nutritional health, allowing you to eat certain foods again. In patients who have remaining teeth, the presence of partials can help save this natural enamel and keep it in place.

What are the eating guidelines with new dentures?
Patients who are just getting used to dentures should take it slowly. First of all, make sure your dentures are completely secure and fitting comfortably. Dr. Lim will recommend an eating plan, such as starting with non-sticky food, chewing slowly and evenly, and cutting your food into smaller pieces.

How should I care for my new dentures?
In order to keep your dentures looking their best and maintain their function, make sure you clean them regularly and as instructed. Try to avoid food or drink that can cause staining. Soak your dentures overnight, and follow the adhesive and adhesive cleaning instructions diligently. Great denture care can prevent gum infection and bad breath, and keep your dentures looking natural.

How are dentures made?
To create your custom dentures, Dr. Lim will take an impression of your mouth and measure your jaw area. He will record the shade of your remaining teeth (if applicable) and attempt to match it. A wax version of the denture is crafted, adjusted to fit, and the wax is replaced with a moldable dough which is then hardened. The denture is then fitted and made ready-to-wear.

How often will my dentures need to be replaced?
As long as your dentures continue to fit comfortably and stay in place, you will probably not need to replace them. However, as you age and change, gums and bone may shift, making your dentures less functional. When jaw alignment changes position, Dr. Lim may recommend you be fitted for a new set of dentures. If you experience difficulty chewing or speaking, inflamed gums, discomfort, or any other indication of change, contact us for a denture check-up.

Will dentures affect my speech?
Dentures will allow some patients to improve their speech, and pronounce words as they did before tooth loss. However, dentures will take some getting used to and may make it difficult to say certain words at first. Dr. Lim can give you advice on how to acclimate your speech and avoid slipping of dentures.
