Endodontics - Root Canal FAQ's
Owasso
Why do I need root canal treatment?
When decay attacks the inner pulp of teeth, the strength and integrity of your tooth is compromised. Decay left untreated can ultimately harm the tooth nerves, causing the pulp to die. When this occurs, the tooth and gum tissue can become severely infected, requiring removal of the tooth. Root canal treatment effectively removes all decaying tissue and allows patients to save their natural teeth.
Why did I get an abscess?
The spread of bacteria deep into the tooth root will eventually affect the underlying bone and cause it to decay as well. When the bone begins to erode, an abscess may grow, forming a painful pocket.
Why is the pulp so susceptible to damage and decay?
Any part of your teeth and gums may become susceptible to decay if ignored. Failure to brush and floss regularly, or have semi-annual professional cleanings, can encourage the build-up of bacteria and allow it to spread to the pulp. Tooth fractures and other injuries also leave the pulp open to bacterial infection.
Is there a risk infection during root canal treatment?
With any invasive procedure, there is a slight risk of infection. However, Dr. Lim and his staff follow strict protocols for keeping the teeth and gums sterile and reducing infection risks. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the Centers for Disease Control and the American Dental Association set specific guidelines for sterilization.
What happens after treatment?
After your root canal is completed and the tooth is filled, Dr. Lim will recommend a crown placement or other restoration to protect your natural enamel. Although your tooth will never be quite as strong as it was with natural pulp, this added barrier will help keep your root canal tooth functional for many years.
