Gum Treatment

Periodontal disease is an all too common form of decay that affects millions of Americans. This chronic bacterial invasion attacks teeth and gums, causing inflamed and bleeding gums and eventually tooth loss. In the early stages of periodontal disease, referred to as gingivitis, reddened and swollen gums indicate its presence. At this stage, periodontal disease may be reversed with impeccable hygiene and treatment. Without proper gum treatment, gingivitis may become periodontitis, (gum disease) forming deep pockets of infection and destroying enamel and bone.
Genetics, smoking, poor nutrition, bad oral hygiene and stress all may play a part in the formation of periodontal disease. Recent studies indicate links between gum disease and an increased risk of heart attack or stroke, an increased risk of delivering pre-term, low birth weight babies, and difficulty controlling blood sugar levels in people with diabetes.
Scaling and Root Planing Gum Treatment
For many patients with gum disease, scaling and root planing can effectively control and manage the problem through careful removal of bacterial sources. During scaling, Dr. Lim uses special cleaning tools to remove plaque and bacteria, eliminating the sources of inflammation. Your root surfaces will then be smoothed in a process called “planing,” allowing the gum tissue to return to normal and tighten around the tooth. Although this treatment is often successful, a good majority of scaling and root planning patients will need ongoing maintenance therapy and/or periodontal surgery.
Periodontal Surgery
You may require a surgical procedure if the tissue around your teeth requires more extensive measures to remove sources of infection. Pocket reduction, regenerative procedures, crown lengthening and soft tissue grafts may be recommended depending on your individual needs.
