Metal-Free Dentistry FAQ's
Dentist in Owasso, Oklahoma
What are traditional “silver” fillings really made of?
Traditional silver fillings are not 100% silver as the name would indicate. Instead, they are typically comprised of 50% mercury, 12 % copper, 15% tin and a little zinc and only 20% silver.
How can mercury become dangerous when it is used in metal fillings?
Mercury is one of the most poisonous elements in nature. Patients who’ve experience problems with mercury in fillings have been exposed to dangerous mercury after the material leaked out in the form of vapor. When there is a mercury leak, it can have harmful effects on bodily organs after being inhaled through the lungs and transported to the stomach. Even small amounts of mercury allowed to reach vital organs can cause symptoms and damage.
When did the dangers of mercury begin to become public?
Although the potential toxicity of mercury has been known for sometime, in 1991 the World Health Organization (WHO) released a paper stating “the largest part of mercury that are found in humans, originate from amalgam fillings and not as earlier thought from fish". Steadily increasing numbers of mercury toxicity cases led many dentists to abandon the use of metal in restorations.
If I am worried about mercury, can I have my metal fillings removed?
