Porcelain Dental Bonding FAQ's
Tulsa, Bartlesville and Owasso
Why are porcelain crowns recommended over metal?
Porcelain is a superior material because of its unusual strength, natural appearance, translucent quality, smooth surface and bonding durability. Many patients come in to our office to replace old metal crowns with porcelain. Porcelain dental bonding also doesn’t carry any of the mercury toxicity risks and other side effects of metal.
Will I need a root canal before a crown?
No, not necessarily. Crowns can sometimes be used to avoid the more invasive root canal. However, most root canal patients will require a crown placement afterwards to protect the weakened tooth structure.
How long will crowns last?
Crowns can last from 5 to 10 years with great hygiene and care. Because they sit on the chewing and biting surfaces of teeth, however, crowns will need replacement more often than other restorations. Make sure you brush and floss religiously and come in for professional cleanings twice a year. Treat your crowned teeth with care – do not chew on non-food items, such as fingernails or pens, and avoid unusually hard food or candy.
When is porcelain bonding recommended?
Dental bonding can be used to repair decayed teeth, cracked or chipped teeth, elongate short teeth, change the shape or size of teeth, close gaps or spaces between teeth, protect tooth roots, or whiten the appearance of teeth.
What happens during a bonding appointment?
During your consultation, Dr. Lim will examine the tooth or teeth that may require bonding. Dr. Lim then chooses a perfect shade to complement your smile. With porcelain bonding, the composite resin material is placed directly onto the tooth and then exposed to a hardening light. The result is a stronger, natural-looking tooth free from defects!
