Sleep Dentistry FAQ

Sleep dentist serving Tulsa and Owasso

What happens during oral sedation?
You will take an oral sedation pill about an hour before your treatment. Have a friend drive you to Dr. Lim’s office as you will begin to become tired. Your coherence will gradually diminish to the point where you are in a dreamlike sleep and unaware of smells, sounds, and other anxiety-causing agents. You will not be completely asleep and able to respond if necessary.

While you are under oral sedation, your vital signs will be constantly monitored to make sure you are safe. Dr. Lim will administer the necessary cosmetic dentistry treatment, and you’ll wake up having no memory of the experience. Patients are usually sedated for a period of 3 to 4 hours. You will need to have someone drive you home as the effects of the sedation will wear off gradually.

What are the advantages of oral sedation?
Advantages of oral conscious sedation include convenience, no needles, low incidence of side effects, rapid recovery, ability to interact, ability to breathe independently, and anxiety alleviation.

Why is dental phobia so dangerous?
This severe fear of the dentist is often so strong, that many patients avoid getting the necessary care they need for healthy teeth and gums. Failure to get professional cleanings or stop the spread of minor cavities can translate into development of severe periodontal disease and multiple tooth loss. Serious dental health problems have also been linked to conditions like heart attack and stroke. Dental phobia can also impact self-esteem, creating social anxiety and causing men and women to withdraw from family and friends.

Is oral sedation recommended for patients who have trouble getting numb?
Yes. Although most patients who choose sedation dentistry do so because of anxiety, this technique can be used on patients who have had difficulty in the past getting completely numb in the mouth area. Patients with a fear of needles may also benefit from sedation dentistry.

Who might be a good candidate for sedation dentistry?
Patients who have mild to severe anxiety, a history of traumatic dental visits, difficulty getting numb, a fear of needles, a sensitive gag reflex, overly sensitive teeth, or who want to complete multiple procedures in one sitting with ease may be good candidates for sedation dentistry. Contact Dr. Lim to determine whether this technique is right for you.

Will I feel any pain?
Most patients feel absolutely no pain!
