Tooth Whitening FAQ's

What causes tooth discoloration?
Although some people are born with the genetic tendency for tooth discoloration, lifestyle characteristics can greatly affect the shade of enamel. Years of smoking, drinking coffee and tea, and eating staining foods can turn teeth yellowish and accelerate enamel dullness and fading.
Who is a good candidate for Zoom! tooth whitening treatment?
Almost anyone who desires whiter teeth will make a great candidate for the Zoom! process. However, Zoom! is not recommended for children age 13 and younger, women who are lactating or pregnant, light sensitive individuals including those undergoing phototherapy or radiation treatment, or patients taking any light sensitive medication. Dr. Lim will do a thorough oral evaluation during your free whitening consultation and let you know if you are a good candidate.
How long will my whitening results last?
The results of each patient’s whitening treatment will vary, depending on the level of whitening and the post-whitening care. To extend the life of your new shade, you will need to follow Dr. Lim’s instructions carefully, including brushing and flossing religiously and using a recommended professional whitening toothpaste. Remember to avoid smoking and ingestion of staining products to keep your teeth sparkling.
How does the Zoom! In-Office System work?
Zoom! whitening gel has a strong but safe concentration of Hydrogen Peroxide. When the whitening gel is applied to your teeth, a special laser light is used to activate the whitening ingredient in the gel with the help of oxygen molecules for dramatically whiter teeth in under an hour. The Zoom! light aids in activating the Hydrogen Peroxide and helps it penetrate the surface of the tooth.
Does Zoom! offer a take home whitening treatment?
Yes – for patients that prefer to whiten at home, or supplement their in-office Zoom! treatment, a take home whitening kit with bleaching trays is available. The Zoom! take home treatment delivers an average of six shades after three applications.
Does the use of laser light pose any danger?
The laser light cannot harm the enamel or structure of your teeth. However, soft gum tissue should not be exposed to the laser light. During your whitening treatment, Dr. Lim will isolate the soft tissue to protect it from laser exposure.
